Bissell vacuum cleaners use a rubber belt attached to a motor to drive the brush roll in the front of the vacuum. Without the belt your Bissell vacuum will still have suction, but it won't roll and the vacuum won't pick up as much debris. Unfortunately, this belt can become worn over time and can break. Most Bissell vacuums are manufactured so you can replace the belt yourself in a matter of minutes. Phillips screwdriver. Step 1. Unplug your Bissell vacuum cleaner from the electrical outlet. Press down on the handle release lever and lower the handle as far as it will go. Lay the vacuum down and turn it over so you are looking at the brush roll. Step 2. Remove the cover on the brush roll. Depending on the model of your Bissell vacuum, the cover may be screwed on, or it may just have plastic retaining tabs.

If the cover is screwed on, use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws holding the cover in place and remove the cover. If the cover is held on by retaining tabs, look for the tabs near the brush roll. Snap the tabs open and lift the cover off. Step 3. Grab the brush roll by the sides and lift it out of its socket. If you are replacing a worn belt, lift the end of the belt off the brush roll and the other end off the motor pulley toward the back of the vacuum.
If you are replacing a broken belt, simply remove the belt and throw it away. Step 4. Loop one end of the new belt around the end of the motor pulley. If your model has a guide rail, run the edge of the belt under the guide rail. Loop the other end around the brush roll.
There is a smooth area on the brush roll between the bristles. Loop the belt around that area. Step 5. Insert the brush roll into the socket. Stretch the belt to make the roll reach the socket. Slide the socket into place. Replace the brush roll cover. Step 6. Rotate the brush roll by hand a few times to center the belt.
Warnings. Avoid vacuuming up pieces of string or shoelaces. These can wrap around the brush roll, causing it to jam and breaking the belt. Warnings.
